Mahakala is the Protector of the Dharma (Buddhist Teachings) in Tibetan-Buddhism and is the arch deity of Bhutan. Maha means “Great” and Kala means “Black”. The deity is called the Great Black One because of its fearful black appearance. But as fearful as it may seem it is simply the wrathful emanation of the Bodhisattva of compassion, known as Avolokiteshvara in Sanskrit and Chenrezig in Bhutanese and Tibetan. For a deity who is actually the ultimate embodiment of compassion and serenity there is really nothing to fear. Simply evoked by practitioners in its wrathful form enables the deity to protect the Dharma from corruption and degeneration. Meditating on Mahakala allows the person or place to be free from impure thoughts and actions. It is called upon to guide and protect the practitioner from delusion and bestow one with the power to overcome negativity and struggles.
